Intercultural Competence Program
Overview
Intercultural Competence is essential to avoid misunderstandings and ensure respectful, productive interactions in our cross-cultural environments. This means having the ability to shift cultural perspectives and appropriately adapt behavior to cultural differences. Research conducted on intercultural effectiveness, cross-cultural adaptation, international job performance, and diversity & inclusion efforts identified Intercultural Competence as a key capability to effectively work and live with people from different cultures.
The Intercultural Competence Program uses the Intercultural Development Inventory® (IDI) to identify levels of cross-cultural competence along a continuum. The inventory has been psychometrically tested and found to have strong validity and reliability across diverse cultural groups and organizations. The IDI will be used as the foundation for providing in-depth insights on engaging with, responding to, and incorporating cultural differences in day-to-day interactions and operations.
This multi-session program provides guidance for individuals, teams, and organizations to shift perspectives and adapt behaviors, policies, practices, and structures from a monocultural mindset to an intercultural mindset. This program is designed to facilitate discussions and actions that are directed toward growth and development. An Intercultural Development Plan (IDP) is provided to build intercultural competence through a series of reflections and activities.
Objectives:
As a result of this course, participants will be able to
-
- Build a bridge across differences to create an inclusive environment.
- Choose behaviors and operations that demonstrate adaptability to cultural differences.
- Minimize disparities between dominant and non-dominant culture members in their environments.
- Develop and utilize a plan to incorporate Intercultural Competence in interactions, practices, policies, and structures.
Culturally Competent Leadership Program
Overview
Your ability to understand, communicate and effectively interact with cross-cultural teams is critical to successful leadership and collaboration. The Culturally Competent Leadership Program develops cultural competence at individual and organizational levels simultaneously. This program focuses on people’s values and behaviors to enable them to engage effectively with colleagues, clients, communities, and groups who are different from them. It also develops awareness of team and organizational policies and practices that influence inclusion and how people respond to issues that emerge in a diverse environment. Culturally competent leaders can start with themselves, an inside-out approach, and ask, “What do I bring to the work environment that may serve as a barrier to healthy interactions?” Then, they “take action” to increase their awareness, broaden their perspective, and influence the environment(s) they are responsible for. Upon completion of the program, in its entirety, you will receive a Certificate of Completion.
Objectives:
As a result of this course, participants will be able to
-
- Adopt leadership practices and policies that are inclusive and culturally competent.
- Examine their own and others’ behaviors, cultural differences, biases, and microaggressions.
- Apply tools and techniques to effectively manage intercultural interactions.
- Plan and implement individual actions that will build skills to be a more culturally competent leader.
